June in the Room
June in the Room
A Sixty-Word SZEN Story:
“What are you staring at Riley?” The question broke the silence and the wave of calm that Riley was feeling. He was looking out the window of the 3rd floor of the school library, fixated on summer vacation and the sheer joy of leaving all of the books that now surrounded him. “Nothing much,” he said. “Just contemplating my options.”
Sometimes the season on the outside is in alignment with our own personal season inside. The weather calls and the heart responds. With summer just around the corner, change is in the air calling for a break in the action for anybody that has the time and disposition to take advantage of the age-old concept of “vacation.” It’s billed as the yearly, relaxing break from the routine. It can be a time for rejuvenation, exploration or self-discovery and sometimes all three.
We’re not sure where Riley’s mind has taken him, but it’s probably not anyplace close, literally or figuratively, to where he is now. Vacations tend to take us away because it’s the distance that provides the all-important perspective. Away from home we see things differently. Away from routine we see change. Away from commitment we see opportunity.
What about this June? It’s a good bet that the concept of vacation and summer has already arrived in whatever room we’re in right now. It’s probably visited that room in our minds many times before the date actually arrived. So what are we waiting for? Let’s take advantage of the season and our disposition, like Riley, to explore the options.
In order to determine which option is right for us, we simply play it out in our mind and if it generates a broad relaxing smile simply thinking about it, that’s the one. May your reality surpass your dream.
Szenippet: We really don’t take time off on vacation; we simply reapply the time we have to something we want to do, not have to do.
